Dynamic, intense and strong: might Gabriel Paulista be Arsenal’s answer?

Gabriel’s former team-mates at Villarreal have only praise for Arsène Wenger’s new signing and believe he will not only quickly adapt to the Premier League but also take charge of Arsenal’s defence

• Gabriel completes move from Villarreal to Arsenal

The last time Gabriel Armando de Abreu posed for a team photograph at Villarreal, he squatted down in the front row dressed all in black while everyone else wore yellow. In his hands was a ceramic yellow submarine, a memento of his time at the Madrigal. It had been brief – he was leaving less than 18 months after he had arrived from Brazil for €3.5m (£2.6m) – but he had left his mark. He said goodbye before last weekend’s match against Levante, Villarreal’s 18th unbeaten, and supporters applauded him on to the field, chanting his name as he joined his now former team-mates lining up before the cameras.

There were tears. Gabriel’s voice cracked and an interview broke off. “It’s a bit difficult,” he said, swallowing hard. “That’s life: one day you’re in one place, the next you’re somewhere else.”

Guinea’s Africa Cup of Nations dream survives against all odds and Ebola taunts

As squad prepares for quarter-final clash with Ghana, coach Michel Dussyer tells how players were treated ‘like they had the plague’ in qualifiers for this year’s tournament

The footballers of Guinea say they were exiled and made to feel like they had “the plague” because of the presence of Ebola in their country when they played their qualifying matches for the Africa Cup of Nations. Members of the squad have told how they were stigmatised and abused.

“We don’t want you here, you have the virus,” airport workers told them as they landed – even though most had flown in from Europe where they play club football. “Ebola! Ebola!” rival fans shouted at them.

'No limits' for Socceroos after Australian triumph, says Ange Postecoglou

With a life intertwined with Australian football it seems appropriate that Ange Postecoglou is the man to lead Australia to a new landmark for the local game, one which takes the Socceroos to a fresh status in the local sporting landscape.

For Postecoglou, who by his own admission grew up as an outsider due to his ethnicity and passion for a foreign sport, the Asian Cup victory is more than just a trophy. The achievement provides credibility for the Socceroos and further helps push the game – his game – into the hearts and minds of 21st century Australians.

Ander Herrera to be patient in bid for regular place at Manchester United

• Spanish midfielder has made only six Premier League starts

• Herrera: ‘It is not easy but I am going to work hard’

• Michael Carrick out for four weeks with muscle injury

Ander Herrera is willing to be patient for his chance to establish himself for Manchester United as the midfielder has struggled for regular game time under Louis van Gaal.

Since being signed in the summer for £29m the Spaniard has made only six Premier League starts, scoring twice. Yet, despite the last of these coming nearly two months ago, in a 2-1 win over Stoke City on 2 December at Old Trafford, Herrera said: “When the manager wants me to help the team I am going to be ready, of course. I am at Manchester United and we have a very good squad with very good players and it is not easy but of course I am going to work hard.
