Fulham’s Nikolay Bodurov fires in volley to sink leaders Derby County
This was not part of the script for Derby County. Their seemingly rampant drive for promotion was met by a hefty, if slightly surprising obstacle in Fulham. It should not derail Steve McClaren’s side but, entering March, a month that usually separates the wheat from the chaff in the race to go up, this display served as a key reminder that no matter how impressive a squad at the former England manager’s disposal, they are there to be shot down.
For Fulham, the threat of consecutive relegations still looms relatively large but, led by a tenacious Scott Parker, they showed great endeavour. You get the sense that if they performed like this every weekend, they would be looking towards the play-offs rather than nervously over their shoulder.

Newcastle United defeat of Aston Villa adds to Tim Sherwood’s despair
As the scale of the task facing him at Aston Villa became increasingly apparent, Tim Sherwood looked suspiciously like a man fighting the temptation to sprint on to the pitch and begin bossing midfield.
The scrappiest of afternoons concluded with Villa summoning no riposte to Papiss Cissé’s first-half winner, leaving their new manager in the thick of a relegation fight. Although Newcastle are safe enough in mid-table this was also a big game for John Carver with his players suggesting they are still very much behind him in the wake of last weekend’s 5-0 debacle at Manchester City.

Barcelona cut Real Madrid’s advantage as Luis Suárez sinks Granada
Barcelona closed within a point of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after an in-form Luis Suárez played a part in all three of their goals in a scrappy 3-1 victory at Granada.
Barça took the lead at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes when Ivan Rakitic smashed the ball into the net from close range after the Granada defender Cala failed to clear a Suárez centre in the 25th minute.

Wayne Rooney double gives Manchester United win over Sunderland
Louis van Gaal said he did not much like Manchester United’s last home win, 3-1 against Burnley, and he will have liked this one even less. Once again United were far from fluent, once again the visitors were a shade unlucky, but once again the three points moved the home side up the table to keep Champions League hopes alive. United are flattered by their present position, tucked in just behind Chelsea and Manchester City, yet they have been there for most of the season and despite appearing to be there for the taking they are still getting away with it.
Jonny Evans was booed midway through the first half for passing back to his own goalkeeper from halfway, before the United crowd once again implored the home team to “attack, attack, attack”. United never used to need any telling, but this current creation looks more like a collective tribute to Ray “The Crab” Wilkins’ passing style than a collection of internationals recently refitted to the tune of £150m.

Ireland and Afghanistan show need for rethink before 2019 World Cup
• Dhoni gives associate nations short shrift after India’s previous plight
In the World Cup of 2011, England kept the tournament alive in the early stages by losing to Ireland and Bangladesh and beating West Indies and South Africa, thereby scraping into the quarter-finals before producing an anaemic performance against Sri Lanka.
This time, until the little epic at Eden Park on Saturday, the associates were the ones keeping us interested. Ireland, who thrashed West Indies and scraped past the United Arab Emirates, have yet to be beaten. Afghanistan frightened Sri Lanka and then participated in a thrilling game when they defeated Scotland by one wicket in Dunedin.

New Zealand survive Mitchell Starc’s menace to tame bullish Australia
• Australia comeback falls short as New Zealand win by a wicket
• Michael Clarke blames ‘extremely poor’ batting on attacking mindset
New Zealand’s bowling against Australia looked very similar to their efforts against Scotland and England. The ball shot through the crease with marked swing. Bats were beaten, stumps were scattered, single-figure scores were marked as closed in the scorebook. Some late-innings biff dragged the total over three figures, but even then the batting side were scattered for 152.
For a while, New Zealand’s batting looked like their effort against England, when Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill sent Steven Finn for 49 runs in two overs, in an assault so grievous you expected security to intervene. Later, New Zealand’s batting more resembled their effort against Scotland, when they lost seven wickets in a drunken stagger towards 143.

European results expose the Premier League’s true level
Arsène Wenger was unusually severe in his criticism of Arsenal’s shortcomings in the wake of the 3-1 humbling by Monaco, though it was a French coach still living and working in France who provided the pithiest assessment of a bad week for Premier League teams in Europe.
René Girard is coach of Lille, mid‑table in Ligue 1 and not even involved in any European action this past week, and from the sound of it he has had enough of exaggerated claims about the quality of football across the Channel. “To those who say our league is shit, it proves there’s perhaps shit elsewhere as well,” Girard said of Monaco’s result, and that was before Liverpool and Tottenham made their Europa League exits.

Former New York Knicks player Anthony Mason dies at 48
The 13-year NBA veteran played for New York from 1991 to 1996, then for the Charlotte Hornets until 2000
The New York Knicks said on Saturday that Anthony Mason, a rugged power forward who was a defensive force for several NBA teams in the 1990s, has died. He was 48.
Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz confirmed Mason’s death, which was first reported by the New York Daily News. The 6ft 7in Mason had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure earlier in February.
