Middlesbrough replace Derby at the top thanks to Bamford and Leadbitter

For the first time since early November 2012, Middlesbrough moved to the top of the Championship, replacing the team who had been there, Derby County. Boro did so with a victory that was surprising in its comprehensive nature, not least to Derby.


The visitors, admittedly, were reduced to 10 men on 62 minutes when Ryan Shotton was shown a red card for a trip on Patrick Bamford and that decision enabled Grant Leadbitter to belt in his sixth penalty of the season to make the score 2-0. But in truth Shotton’s dismissal was not crucial to the outcome.
