Britain’s Louis Smith wins pommel gold at European Championships

• Olympian’s wait for top podium place ends in France

• Fellow Briton Kristian Thomas wins gold on the floor

Louis Smith ended his wait to win a gold medal in a major competition with victory in the pommel horse final at the European Gymnastics Championships in Montpellier.

Smith has won two Olympic medals on the pommel – bronze in Beijing in 2008 and silver at London 2012 – but he was finally on top of the podium after scoring 15.8 on an afternoon when Kristian Thomas also took gold for Britain on the floor.
