Nigel Twiston-Davies has The New One ready for the Champion Hurdle

Cheltenham Festival fancy trying to make up for luckless run

Trainer certain his charge will run the hot favourite close

Nigel Twiston-Davies, the trainer of The New One, said on Thursday that he believes his horse should be “one of four co-favourites” for the Champion Hurdle on 10 March, a race in which The New One ran on to finish third last season after being badly hampered in the early stages. “It seems just as strong a race [as last year],” Twiston-Davies said, “it’s just is Faugheen [the hot 5-4 favourite] is as good as the markets say?”


The New One is the only British-trained contender at odds shorter than 40-1 for the feature race on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, but is expected to go off as the second-favourite next month behind Faugheen, one of three runners in the race from Willie Mullins’s dominant Irish yard. The field also includes Jezki, last year’s winner, and Mullins’s hugely popular Hurricane Fly, successful in the race in both 2011 and 2013.
